What new technique did you employ to catch more saltwater fish in 2013? For us it was the use of Sabiki rigs to catch live herring. We used rigs with six hooks, where the attractor was a reasonable imitation of the copepods and krill that herring feed upon. The technique was to drop the rig into the school of fish and when you felt some resistance, drop it a little further, then bring it back up and often all six hooks had fish on them. Lifting all six herring over the side of the boat proved to be more of a challenge, and usually one or two would fall off. It’s still better than trying to use a net, since the six-hook leader tangles easily. The live bait proved deadly on lingcod, and when cut into plugs, was like candy to the coho.
